The Ultimate Big Game Fishing Experience!

If you’re serious about big game fishing in the Indian Ocean, look no further than the Vilanculous, home to the true leviathans of the deep. The Archipelago provides sport anglers with the opportunity to hook into enormous marlin, kingfish, sailfish, tuna and dorado.

Sail Pontão Marapi, a premier private villa, located on the Archipelago, boasts access to one of the finest game fishing boats on the East African coast, the Mullet.

According to Mush Nichols, a former captain of the South African Springbok fishing team, the boat is well designed, beautifully laid out and an absolute pleasure to fish from. “Mullet is probably one of the finest sport fishing boats I have ever skippered. The boat is superbly finished with perfectly-matched twin 150 hp power units. Mullet is highly maneuverable and has been designed to accommodate everything from salt water fly anglers to prolonged tussles with trophy marlin.”

Skippers will assist guests throughout the process, ensuring that novices and pros alike get the ultimate African fishing experience.

Fishing In The Area

The Bazaruto Archipelago is a veritable angler’s paradise, with a wide variety of pelagic game fish inhabiting the waters throughout the year. Black marlin season starts in early October and ends towards the end of January, while blue and striped marlin frequent the shores from September through to January.

With numerous marlin over 1000 lbs landed in the region, including the all-Africa record weighing in at just under 1300 lb, the Bazaruto Archipelago is ranked as one of the top marlin-fishing destinations in the world.

Sailfish are caught in abundance from June through to September. These highly-acrobatic opponents often spend more time in the air than in the water and provide an extremely exhilarating sport fishing experience. On a good day, it’s not uncommon to hook into four or five of the beasts, although landing them is another story entirely.
Light-tackle anglers will not be disappointed with the large variety of sport fish available throughout the year.

Species commonly encountered include:

  • Tuna
  • Wahoo
  • Kingfish
  • Bonefish
  • Snapper
  • Dorado
  • Queenfish
  • Barracuda
  • King mackerel
  • and many more

Tackle and Skill Levels

Guests are welcome to bring their own fishing equipment, although Mullet is fully equipped for every eventuality. Please advise the skippers as to what role you’d like to play in the process. Skippers and deckhands will gladly take care of all baiting and trace setting requirements, although experienced anglers are welcome to set their own rigs.
